Several days ago, sirens rang out across Southern Israel urging citizens to seek shelter, as rockets were once again being fired form Gaza. Such rocket fire is not uncommon in the region, and on several occasions before this has triggered an escalating series of reprisals which eventually devolved into a full-scale war. What was different this time however, was who was doing the firing. In the past, rockets fired from Gaza were either launched by Hamas, the dominant armed faction within the small enclave, or by Palestinian Islamic Jihad – a more radical Islamic faction largely subservient to Hamas. These more recent volley of rockets, fired on the night of the 3rd of June, were however fired by a different group entirely.
